Reflections on Riverlea

Mary Jo Cusack photo.
Mary Jo Cusack, Mayor

On being Mayor. Being Mayor of Riverlea is a unique and singular experience. Most of it is fun–an opportunity to meet neighbors and share ideas–and to work with a small Village that is still capable of creating memories of small town government of the past. One of the most exciting things about Riverlea is that we have always had someone extremely well qualified for all of the elective and appointive offices we need. And almost always, residents are willing to serve to make the Village better. It is also an opportunity to meet many interesting people from other municipalities. Many boards expect the Mayor's attendance: Mid Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC), FEMA, etc., and organizations such as the Wildlife group. It requires a major commitment and a lot of time. This year, the office of Mayor is open for your consideration. There are excellent people to be considered for this job. They have already contributed time and energy to Riverlea and have some idea of the commitment that will be necessary. I am sure the Village will continue to be in very good hands.

July 4 picnic. The annual July 4 picnic provided a good time for all. Thank you to Jody and Mike Jones for taking over with hot dogs, etc. And to Jon Ankrom for getting the tables up, and Pam Colwell who helped organize. They are in addition to the other volunteers, including picnic goers who helped take down the tables and chairs. Riverlea has a wonderful community spirit.

Losses. It is always difficult to lose residents, especially when they are long time, much beloved residents. And so we will miss Joe McMillan and Dr. Thomas T.F. Tsai. To their families, we express our gratitude for having them here with us for so long.

In memory of

Joseph G. McMillan, 89, June 27, 2011. He was born in Danville, Ohio. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Jean Irwin, and children, David, James, Susan, and Robert. He served in WWII on the USS Rockwall as a Lt.jg commander of landing craft. Joe graduated from Ohio University. He was born on a farm and loved plants, animals, life and nature. Contributions may be made in his name to HomeReach Hospice or a charity that assists veterans in need.

Dr. Thomas T. F. Tsai, 98, July 7, 2011, at Riverside Methodist Hospital. Born in Shandong, China, he received a medical degree from St. John's University in Shanghai. In 1962 came to Columbus for training in psychiatry at the OSU Hospital. He was a beloved husband and father. Survivors include daughter, Sheila (Greg) Whincup of British Columbia; and son, Dr. David Tsai (Lynda) Los Angeles. Family will be at Dr. Tsai's home to receive visitors on Saturday, July 16, from 2-5 pm.

Draft highlights from the June 20, 2011 Council meeting

Mayor. FEMA wants someone from Riverlea to attend their meetings. The vacant home at Southington and Olentangy has overgrown grass and weeds. The Mayor is in the process of having the Solicitor contact them.

Solicitor. The company that proposed moving their radio station community license to Riverlea amended their application to Westerville and requested Riverlea Council withdraw their objection; request was denied.

Planning Commissioner. Certificate of Appropriateness application for landscaping approved for 142 W. Riverglen Drive.

Marshal. 240 checks with no citations or warnings. There were two thefts; she reminded residents to keep all doors and sheds locked.

Street Commissioner. Radico has the pumps for the lift station; installation within a month. The builder for the new home on Crescent Court has sediment controls in place.

The Burgess & Niple invoice of $476.08 was approved; the 2012 Tax Budget was adopted. SWACO resolutions were tabled until Council can review the plan update.

Mosquito spraying. The Mayor asked if Council wanted the Village sprayed for mosquitoes. Columbus does the spraying. Decision postponed.

Forum on Worthington annexation

The Riverlea Annexation Commissioners, McHugh, Gordon and MacGilvray, led the forum with a presentation and solicited feedback. It was not a debate but an information session. What is agreeable to one person may not be agreeable to another. The discussion focused on the implications of annexation and on items they were asking for input from the audience.

What is the impact of annexation on Sharon Township? Sharon Township officials have not attended any of the meetings so there may not be any immediate impact. Why would Worthington want Riverlea? Higher household income, higher property values, already part of the community, to square off boundaries and Worthington may qualify for funds from the state for combining municipalities. Worthington is not a goldmine; they have problems, too.

Adjournment: 9:10 pm.
