Letter Carriers in Riverlea
Our letter carriers are having problems with dogs
[pdf] when they are delivering the mail. Residents need to understand that the letter carrier cannot assume all dogs are nice and won't bite. Many of the carriers have been bitten before. Residents need to make sure their dogs are secured for mail delivery.
The letter carrier can stop delivering the mail not only to the house with the problem dog but also the whole area where a dog runs loose. Carriers can use pepper spray on your dog and report you to Franklin County Animal Control. If your dog bites the letter carrier, your dog can be characterized as a "dangerous dog" which will require you to buy special insurance, and you could be charged with a misdemeanor. You will also be financially liable. So please make sure your dog is either indoors, on a leash, or properly fenced (not in the front yard) for mail delivery.
